If it’s been a while since your last holiday, you might be looking forward to getting away again. Before you book, though, it’s worth checking a few important things – particularly your passport, health documents and travel insurance.
Is your passport still suitable?
If you’re travelling to a Schengen country such as Spain, France, Italy, Portugal or Greece, your British passport must:
- Have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive
- Be valid for at least three months after you plan to leave
If you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, check the dates carefully. Some passports have extra months carried over from an earlier passport, which can make the expiry date look fine when it may not meet the rules for travelling to Europe.
Travelling further afield? Requirements can be different, so check the latest FCDO travel advice for your destination and any stopovers.
Allow a little extra time at the airport
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) means many non-EU travellers will have their fingerprints and photo taken when entering Europe. You may be asked for them again when leaving.
There’s nothing you need to apply for and no fee to pay, but border checks may take a little longer. If standing for long periods is difficult, contact your airline or airport before you travel to ask about assistance.
There’s no need to apply for ETIAS yet. It hasn’t launched and there’s currently no confirmed start date.
Take care of the essentials
Before you set off, make sure your GHIC is valid and that you have enough medication for your trip. Keep medicines in their original packaging and check whether any are restricted at your destination.
If you use regular medication or medical equipment, a letter from your GP can also be useful.
And don’t forget your travel insurance. Buying it when you book your holiday can mean you’re covered for certain problems that happen before you travel, as well as during your trip.
If you have a pre-existing medical condition, tell your insurer and let them know if your health changes before you go.
