What is a GHIC Card?
The GHIC card took over from the old EHIC card when the UK left the EU. It gives UK residents access to necessary state healthcare in EU countries (plus places like Switzerland and Australia) at the same rates locals pay.
So if you get sick or injured while you’re away, you can get treatment without worrying about massive private medical costs.
It covers things like:
- Urgent medical care
- Treatment for pre-existing or chronic conditions
- Routine maternity care (not planned deliveries)
- Essential treatments like oxygen or dialysis (if arranged in advance)
Just remember – this isn’t private health insurance. It won’t cover absolutely everything, and some treatment still costs money, but it stops you from being overcharged for being a tourist.
Get travel insurance to support your GHIC
Your GHIC is great, but it doesn’t cover everything. It won’t help with:
- Getting you back to the UK if needed
- Lost luggage or cancelled trips
That’s where travel insurance steps in. Using your GHIC alongside a solid travel policy means you’re covered for the basics and everything else that could go wrong.
We always suggest taking both. Travel insurance fills the gaps your GHIC can’t handle and gives you complete peace of mind.
Our OK To Travel and Freedom policies actually work with your GHIC card. When you use your GHIC for medical treatment abroad and it reduces your costs, we might waive the usual policy excess on your claim, saving you even more money.
How to apply for a GHIC card:
Visit the official NHS website to apply for your free GHIC:
- Give some basic details and show proof you live in the UK
- Everyone travelling needs their own card (including children)
- Your card will arrive in about 7-10 days and is valid for 5 years
🚨 Watch out for unofficial websites that try to charge you – the card is completely free through the NHS.
Forgot your card while you’re away? No problem. Contact the NHS for a Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC) and you’ll get the same coverage in emergencies.
Always carry your GHIC card when you travel
Your GHIC is one of those travel essentials that too many people overlook. It’s not a substitute for travel insurance, but it’ll cut your costs and worry if you end up needing medical treatment abroad.
Before you head to the airport, apply for your GHIC, tuck it away with your passport, and travel with confidence knowing you’ve made a smart choice to protect yourself and your finances.
