Specialist travel insurance for allergies and anaphylaxis when travelling to Europe or worldwide.
Anaphylaxis is a serious, whole-body allergic reaction that always requires an emergency response. It is usually considered anaphylaxis when breathing is affected or when there are changes in heart rhythm or blood pressure. Serious symptoms, known as the ABC symptoms, can include:
Swelling in the throat, tongue or upper airways
Tightening of the throat, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing
Sudden wheezing
Breathing difficulty
Noisy breathing
Dizziness or feeling faint
Sudden sleepiness or tiredness
Confusion, pale clammy skin, loss of consciousness
Other possible symptoms include hives (urticaria), itching or tingling in the mouth, swelling of the lips, face or eyes, and stomach pain or vomiting.
People at risk of anaphylaxis are often prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors for emergency use.
Anaphylaxis occurs when someone is exposed to an allergen. Common triggers include foods, medicines and insect stings.
When arranging your travel insurance with OK To Travel, it is important to declare any allergies you have, as well as any episodes of anaphylaxis you’ve had in the past. This will ensure that you are covered under the policy for any complications due to anaphylaxis when travelling in Europe or further afield. If you are unsure of how to answer any of the medical screening questions on our website, you are welcome to call our medically aware team at our UK-based contact centre.
At OK To Travel, we understand that travelling with anaphylaxis can be worrying, especially when travelling can cause a change in routine and diet. We believe your condition should not prevent you from being able to get cover for anaphylaxis on your travel insurance at a fair price.
Anaphylaxis UK is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to supporting people with serious allergies. For over 25 years, they’ve provided evidence-based information for individuals, families, businesses and education settings.

Some of our most frequently asked questions about travel insurance.
As anaphylaxis is something that can be triggered at any time, it is important to declare your allergy and provide as much information as you can about it. This ensures that you would be covered under the policy if there were any complications to do with anaphylaxis when travelling overseas.
While it is possible to travel with anaphylaxis, you can be exposed to triggers you do not usually come across in your day-to-day life, so it is important that you speak with your doctor or charity representative before travelling to get advice on how to keep yourself safe abroad. Furthermore, if you are flying, you should speak with your airline beforehand to make them aware of any allergies or triggers you have so that they can ensure you have a safe flight. Once declared, anaphylaxis will be displayed on your insurance documents, making health professionals aware of your condition in the event of a medical emergency.
