Travelling with epilepsy

If you live with epilepsy and are planning a holiday, finding the right travel insurance is an important part of preparing for your trip. At OK To Travel, we understand that epilepsy affects everyone differently. Some people manage their condition with medication and experience well-controlled symptoms, while others may have more frequent seizures or more complex medical histories.

We also recognise that epilepsy can be linked to other underlying conditions, such as head injuries, strokes, brain tumours, or haemorrhages. That’s why we take an individual approach, helping you compare a range of travel insurance policies tailored to your specific circumstances. By accessing multiple insurers, you can explore options that reflect your needs, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all policy.

Many standard travel insurance providers offer low-cost policies, but these often exclude pre-existing medical conditions like epilepsy or anything connected to them. Even if your epilepsy is well controlled, choosing a policy that excludes your condition could leave you responsible for significant costs if something goes wrong. This may include emergency medical treatment abroad, hospital stays, or the cost of returning to the UK.

At OK To Travel, we aim to make the process straightforward while helping you find appropriate cover. By completing a simple medical screening, you can compare quotes that take your epilepsy into account, ensuring the level of cover reflects your condition. If your epilepsy is well managed or you have been seizure-free for a period of time, this will be considered, and your premium will be calculated accordingly based on your individual risk profile.

Having epilepsy travel insurance that includes your condition helps ensure you are protected throughout your trip. By comparing multiple policies and selecting the cover that suits your medical needs and travel plans, you can travel with greater confidence, knowing your insurance is designed around you.

Applying for travel insurance if you suffer with seizures

At OK To Travel, we offer a range of benefits designed specifically for travellers with epilepsy, giving you the flexibility to choose a policy that suits your needs without paying for unnecessary extras. By comparing different levels of cover, you can select the option that reflects both your condition and your travel plans.

We provide multiple levels of cover, including Premier, Premier Extra and Premier Plus, all of which include cancellation protection as well as access to a 24-hour emergency medical assistance service, ensuring help is always available when you need it. Policies also include cover for lost or stolen medication, emergency medical treatment, hospital fees and repatriation costs, helping to protect you against the unexpected while you are abroad.

It’s important to have cover in place that includes your epilepsy, as complications can arise at any time. If your condition leads to medical issues while you are away, your policy is designed to support you, including arranging your return to the UK for treatment if this is deemed medically necessary.

In addition to medical cover, our policies also include protection for the general aspects of travel, such as your personal belongings, personal accident cover and travel delays, giving you more complete protection throughout your trip. If you are travelling with others, your companions can also be included on your policy, meaning they may be covered if your epilepsy causes your trip to be cancelled or interrupted.

By comparing the available options and choosing the right level of cover, you can arrange epilepsy travel insurance that protects both your health and your holiday, allowing you to travel with greater peace of mind.

FAQs

Some of our most frequently asked questions about travel insurance.

  • Do I need to declare my cholesterol medication?

We’re very experienced handling medical travel insurance and understand that many people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes are also prescribed precautionary blood pressure and cholesterol medication. It’s important to declare these as medical conditions in additional to your diabetes to ensure you are fully protected in the event of a medical claim.

  • When should I start my policy?

You should buy your travel insurance as soon as you book your trip if you have opted for a product that included cancellation cover. In regards the trip itself, you are covered from the time you start your trip right up until the day you return back to the UK.

If you opt to purchase Annual Multi-Trip cover, please consider starting the policy immediately so you have cancellation cover in place, should anything unforeseen happen before you travel.

  • Who is eligible to purchase cover with OK To Travel?

Our travel insurance products are available to permanent UK residents who are registered with a GP in the UK. Some of our products can also cover residents of the Channel Islands or Isle of Man.
