We are proud to support LUPUS UK with specialist medical travel insurance.
If you’re living with lupus and thinking about going on holiday, it’s completely natural to have questions about finding the right travel insurance. The good news is – you can still travel, and with the right cover in place, you can do so feeling supported and reassured.
Lupus is a long-term autoimmune condition, which means the immune system can sometimes attack healthy parts of the body. It can affect people in very different ways, from mild and well‑controlled symptoms to more complex flare-ups that may need careful management. Because of this, we understand that your travel insurance needs to reflect you as an individual, not just the name of your condition.
At OK To Travel, we take a more personal approach. We know that travelling with lupus can feel uncertain at times, so we aim to make the process as simple and supportive as possible. By helping you compare a range of travel insurance options from a panel of insurers, we give you the flexibility to choose cover that suits your health, your trip, and your peace of mind.
When you apply, you’ll be guided through a simple and confidential medical screening process, where you can tell us about your lupus, any symptoms, and the treatment or medication you’re currently receiving. This ensures the policies you’re shown are tailored to your circumstances and helps make sure your cover is valid if you need it while you’re away.
Whether your lupus is stable or you’re managing changes in your condition, we’re here to help you find appropriate cover. If your condition has been declared and accepted, your policy can include protection for medical emergencies abroad, including complications related to lupus, as well as cover for cancellation and other important aspects of your trip, depending on the level you choose.
We also make sure support is always close at hand. Every policy includes access to a 24-hour emergency medical assistance service, so wherever you are in the world, you know help is available if you need it.
You’re not alone in living with lupus, either. Organisations such as LUPUS UK, the only national registered charity supporting people with systemic and discoid lupus, provide invaluable support through research, specialist nurses, and community networks for patients, families, and friends. Knowing that support is available both at home and abroad can make travelling feel much more achievable.
Travelling with lupus may take a little extra planning, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. By arranging the right insurance and choosing cover tailored to your needs, you can focus on enjoying your time away with confidence and peace of mind.
If you’re planning to travel with lupus, taking a little extra time to prepare can make a big difference to how confident and comfortable you feel during your trip. If you are currently experiencing a flare-up or dealing with any other illness, it’s always a good idea to speak to your GP or consultant before you travel. They can offer guidance based on your current health and help you decide whether it’s the right time to go ahead with your plans.
When organising your holiday, try to pace yourself and start planning early where possible. Taking your time can help reduce stress, which is important when managing a condition like lupus. Choosing the right destination can also play a role in your overall well-being, so if you are travelling abroad, you may wish to consider countries with good sanitation, access to clean water, and reliable medical facilities.
It’s also important to be prepared while you’re away. Keeping the contact details for your travel insurer’s 24-hour medical assistance team easily accessible means you know exactly who to call if you need help in an emergency. You should also carry a written list of your medical conditions along with the names of any medication you are taking, as this can be extremely helpful if you need medical attention while abroad.
By planning ahead, looking after your health, and making sure you have the right support in place, travelling with lupus can feel much more manageable – allowing you to focus on enjoying your trip with greater peace of mind.

Some of our most frequently asked questions about travel insurance.
You will need to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions, including lupus, during the customer quote journey. However, we don’t need to know the names or dosage of your tablets.
Yes! When you are arranging your travel insurance, you’ll be asked if you are cruising and cruise cover will be added to your quote to ensure you gain the additional benefits such as cabin confinement and missed departure. Often this is a requirement of cruise operators, something you may want to check.
OK To Travel policies include cover for the cost of replacing medication that is lost or stolen up to the limit shown in the policy wording. Simply call the medical assistance team for help.
