Travel insurance for allergies and anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a serious whole-body allergic reaction. It always requires an emergency response. An allergic reaction is usually considered to be anaphylaxis when it involves difficulty in breathing or affects the heart rhythm or blood pressure. Serious symptoms are often referred to as the ABC symptoms and can include any one or more of the following:

  • AIRWAY - swelling in the throat, tongue or upper airways (tightening of the throat, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing)
  • BREATHING - sudden onset wheezing, breathing difficulty, noisy breathing.
  • CIRCULATION - dizziness, feeling faint, sudden sleepiness, tiredness, confusion, pale clammy skin, loss of consciousness.

Other symptoms that might be present include:

  • a red raised rash (known as hives or urticaria) anywhere on the body
  • a tingling or itchy feeling in the mouth
  • swelling of lips, face or eyes
  • stomach pain or vomiting.

People at risk of anaphylaxis are often prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors, which can be used in an emergency to reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis can occur when someone is exposed to something they are allergic to (known as an allergen). Common triggers include foods, medicines and insect stings. When arranging your travel insurance with OK To Travel, it is important to declare any allergies you have, as well as any episodes of anaphylaxis you've had in the past. This will ensure that you are covered under the policy for any complications due to anaphylaxis when travelling in Europe or further afield. If you are unsure of how to answer any of the medical screening questions on our website, you are welcome to call our medically aware team at our UK-based contact centre.

Anaphylaxis frequently asked questions

Do I need to declare anaphylaxis on my travel insurance?

As anaphylaxis is something that can be triggered at any time, it is important to declare your allergy and provide as much information as you can about it. This ensures that you would be covered under the policy if there were any complications to do with anaphylaxis when travelling overseas.
